Required certifications for bartenders by state and type

RBS Certification (California)

Required for all servers of alcohol in California since July 2022.

  • Mandatory for all bartenders and servers in California
  • Valid for 3 years
  • $10-50 depending on provider
  • Takes about 3-4 hours to complete online

TIPS Certification

Training for Intervention ProcedureS - nationally recognized alcohol service certification.

  • Not legally required, but many employers prefer it
  • Valid for 3 years in most states
  • $40-50 online
  • About 3-4 hours to complete
  • Shows employers you take responsible service seriously

ServSafe Alcohol

National Restaurant Association's alcohol server certification.

  • Accepted in most states, required by some employers
  • Valid for 3-5 years depending on state
  • $15-40
  • About 2-3 hours to complete
  • Widely recognized by chain restaurants and hotels

Food Handler Card

Required in most states if you handle any food items.

  • Required in most states within 30 days of hiring
  • Valid for 2-5 years depending on state
  • $10-20
  • About 1-2 hours to complete online
  • Even bartenders may need this if serving food
